Everything you need to know to get started with your new puppy in your home

For 26 years I have trained animals for film and TV. The majority of those jobs were in Los Angeles and were commercials. Those commercials had puppies in them.  Lots and lots of puppies . I trained the puppies for the Budweiser Super Bowls commercials and years of Purina Puppy Chow commercials...Plus too many other jobs to mention (you can check out all my jobs at www.tailsticks.com/commercials )

I currently live on the North Shore with my pack but can travel anywhere on island and visit you in your home to get you and your puppy on the right track to a happy and well adjusted future together...

So you have a new puppy! Congratulations!

If you are reading this and you have not yet got your puppy but are planning on getting one, then lets get started. Its always best to be prepared ahead of time and I can help you with everything you need to purchase/pick up prior to getting the pup. We can start with an email and I'll give you a shopping list of things you will need, then we can schedule an in home visit to go over everything else once the pup arrives.

If you just got your puppy and suddenly realize you don't really know what to do, it's okay! Or it's been a while since you have had a puppy and you need a refresher course to get you on the right path.  Either way my in home visits will give you a plan and a schedule that works. In Hawaii we also have many homes that are not the easiest for a young pup to navigate to get in and out so they can learn housebreaking successfully. I will take a look at the layout of your home and figure out a plan that works.

There are so many moving parts that go into raising a well adjusted pup, it can get overwhelming.  How you shape your pup and what you expose it to in its early months/years can all have a lifelong, lasting effects.

From my vast experience with puppies (I have lost count how many puppies I have had in my home in the last 26 years) I can guide you and help you set up your home to get you and your pup on the right track. And please know, I am not getting this from a book or from a handful of clients puppies, all my knowledge is based on firsthand experience with puppies in my own home and through trial and error over the past few decades.

Some of the things we will cover in an in home visit are:

  • Crate training

  • House breaking

  • Feeding and water schedule

  • Correct clean up of accidents

  • Nipping at hands

  • Chewing on furniture

  • Puppy pen set up

  • To wee wee pad or not!

  • Toys - which are best for your teething pup

  • Food and treat choices

  • Veterinarian recommendations

  • The start of basic obedience

  • Leash and equipment advise

  • Puppy proofing your home and garden advise

  • Explaining fear stages and growth stages

You can also join my private Facebook group that has puppy information added on a regular basis. This includes training videos for your puppy. Its a great resource to follow up and ask questions and to get your puppy started on some basic training.

The in home visit can take 1.5 - 2 hours. The cost is $200 for North Shore, Windward, Honolulu and $225 for Millilani, Ewa, Kapolei and Waianae.

You will need to have a size appropriate crate prior to my visit. I highly recommend checking on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace as they are always listed for sale at great prices/used.
